The Saayman Line

The paternal grandmother’s line. Maria Margaretha Saayman was born at Calitzdorp on 27 October 1906 and baptised there a month later; her baptism register entry names her parents Jacobus Ernst Saayman and Hendrina Margaretha Kriel. She married Attie’s grandfather Adriaan Albertus Retief at Ladismith on the last day of 1930.

One generation further up, the 1878 Calitzdorp baptism of Jacobus Ernst Saayman names his parents — Johannes Mattheus Saayman × Maria Margaretha Kotze — and gives us a second rung on the Saayman side, this time also from the DRC church registers.

The family is rooted Calitzdorp → Laingsburg, which explains why Attie’s grandmother was schooled at Laingsburg even though she was born at Calitzdorp.

Open thread: the deeper question is whether this Saayman branch joins the Daniel Zaaijman / Krotoa root or a separate progenitor. The next rung up — Johannes Mattheus Saayman’s parents — would settle it.
