On Wandering Around in Africa

Poetry · English

Nature has never so deeply stirred me
as when in its majesty I have awakened.
The sun has not risen yet over the mountain
from where the mist and the clouds are pouring.
There is no life in the peaks at this hour
for the spell of the night is still fresh over all.
Yet, there's a hint - a suggestion of day.
And I sit and I wait for the sun's first ray.

Hear me, oh hear me all stressed and depressed!
Wander in Africa - feel unpossessed.

The sun is already aburn in the sky.
No clouds nor a breeze in the air so dry.
The heat and the dust and the beasts of the veld,
the numerous species of birds all around.
These are the things I can see as I sit
on the top of the mountain - the beacon of time.

Hear me, oh hear me all lost and alone!
Wander in Africa - make it your own.

African nights - a blessing from the gods -
filled with the sounds of the beautiful wild.
If not the morning and if not the noon,
hear me, oh hear me all pitiable ones,
then wandering 'round on an African night
has got to convince you, show you a sight
that ever again in your darkest of toil
shall remind you of unrivalled African soil.
