On 17 September 1883, Jan Wolfaard Meades (1857–1940) married Francina Carolina Scholtz (1861–1930) at Dutoit’s Pan. The name is worth pausing on: Du Toit’s Pan was one of the four alluvial diamond-fields that turned Griqualand West into the town of Kimberley in the 1870s. By 1883 the diggings and the town had grown together into one working industrial city — probably South Africa’s fastest-growing in that decade.
The couple raised nine children. Their son David Jacobus Meades (1885–1960) drifted north-east into the Orange Free State and himself married Maria Dorothea Petronella van Tonder; their granddaughter Francina Carolina Meades — Izelle’s paternal grandmother — was born at Petrusburg on 16 December 1915, carrying her grandmother’s Francina Carolina given names unchanged. Grandmother to granddaughter, two generations later, one small act of naming preservation.
The larger arc: within thirty-two years the family had walked from a Kimberley diamond wedding to a Free State birth registry — the same trajectory that shaped much of Afrikaner South Africa in that period.
