The recurring names — three and three

Two stretches where the same name carries straight down three generations. Andries Johannes at Gen 5–6–7; Adriaan Albertus at Gen 8–9–10. Six men, two names, six consecutive generations.

The Retief spine has two stretches where the same name carries straight down three generations in a row.

Andries Johannes Retief appears at Gen 5, Gen 6, and Gen 7. The Gen 5 Andries Johannes died young, in 1843. His Gen 6 son was six years old when his father died — and lived long enough to name his own son the same. Three Andries Johannes Retiefs in direct succession.

Three generations later, Adriaan Albertus Retief appears at Gen 8, Gen 9, and Gen 10 — Attie’s grandfather, his father, and Attie himself. (The Afrikaans diminutive Attie is exactly that: a shortening of Adriaan.)

Six men, two names, six consecutive generations. A surprisingly small naming vocabulary holding together a much larger family.
