The generation some online trees (WikiTree) wrongly compressed out — and the pivot of the whole paternal spine. Attie’s family record was right: this Andries Johannes Retief, born 1817 at Bokke Kraal, married Anne Laker at Cape Town on 30 July 1837 and died young, 22 July 1843, at the farm Windhoek in the Zwartland (Swartland), Piketberg district.

His 1843 estate Death Notice is the keystone document of the family: in one page it names his parents (Gen 4), himself (Gen 5), and his three minor children (Gen 6) — including Attie’s direct ancestor Andries Johannes Retief (b. 1837) — and records the farm name Windhoek that the family carried in memory for nearly two centuries.

One piece of paper that names three generations
The 1843 Death Notice of Andries Johannes Retief — a single sheet at the Master's office that anchors Gen 4, 5 and 6 at once, and confirms the farm name Windhoek from the clerk's own hand.
The generation WikiTree dropped — and the family remembered
Public trees quietly skipped Gen 5. The family kept them. The 1837 DRC marriage, the 1839 Swartland baptism, and the 1843 estate all say the family was right.
The recurring names — three and three

The Sussex family that landed at Piketberg
James Laker was christened in Rudgwick, Sussex in 1790. By 1819 the family had crossed to the Cape — and specifically to Piketberg, the exact small farming district the Retiefs had been working since the early 1700s.
Survival at Windhoek
Andries Johannes Retief (Gen 5) died at twenty-five. His son and namesake was six when the estate was inventoried. The whole line continues only because the boy — and his sister — survived 1843.
