The generation WikiTree dropped — and the family remembered

1817–1843

Public trees quietly skipped Gen 5. The family kept them. The 1837 DRC marriage, the 1839 Swartland baptism, and the 1843 estate all say the family was right.

Some online trees, including WikiTree, had quietly compressed Gen 5 out of the spine — skipping straight over Andries Johannes Retief (1817–1843) and his wife Anne Laker, as though they had never existed. The family record kept them. So did the registers, in the end. The 1837 Cape Town marriage of Andries Retief × Anna Laker appears in the DRC registers more than once; their daughter Sophia Joanna Elisabeth was baptised at Swartland in October 1839; their estate was wound up in 1843. The family was right.
