The English Sussex thread married into the paternal spine at Gen 5. Daughter of James Laker (christened Rudgwick, Sussex, 1790) and Sophia Pearce (married Marylebone, London, 1815) — an English family that had settled at Piketberg, exactly the same Cape farming district as the Retiefs. Anne married Andries Johannes Retief at Cape Town in 1837 and was widowed in 1843.

Public trees quietly skipped Gen 5. The family kept them. The 1837 DRC marriage, the 1839 Swartland baptism, and the 1843 estate all say the family was right.
James Laker was christened in Rudgwick, Sussex in 1790. By 1819 the family had crossed to the Cape — and specifically to Piketberg, the exact small farming district the Retiefs had been working since the early 1700s.
